It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been a year since Lincoln’s airport embarked on a remarkable transformation journey. The LNK Next project aims to remodel and modernize the Lincoln Airport’s aging 50-year-old terminal. With the first stage completed, and phase two well underway, completion of project will be unveiled in its entirety by May of 2024. Phase one of this ambitious project, opened its doors to travelers in June 2023. Since then, passengers have had the pleasure of experiencing a host of new and exciting upgrades that have elevated their airport experience.
Phase One: Tuning up the Terminal
Travelers have been treated to a slew of amenities designed to make their journey smoother and more enjoyable. One standout addition is N-Flight, a remarkable pub and market that showcases not only a variety of local beers but also a selection of delectable Nebraska-inspired dishes.
In addition to N-Flight, the LNK Flyer’s Club Lounge is exclusively available to individuals who qualify and apply for the program. One of the exciting features of the lounge is the designated workspace. This area is designed to cater to travelers who need to stay productive while on the go. With delicious snacks, complimentary beverages, and a sunny view of the ramp, the busy traveler will have everything needed to catch up on emails or prepare for important tasks.
The terminal’s upgrades don’t stop there. Brand new ticket counters, six gates, and various other amenities, including a pet relief area, an elegant mother’s room, and accessible restrooms, have been thoughtfully integrated into the terminal’s design. These enhancements ensure that travelers can navigate the airport with ease and comfort, regardless of their unique needs.
Phase Two: A Glimpse of the Future
While phase one of the project has already dazzled travelers, the Lincoln Airport Authority is wasting no time in moving forward with phase two. This phase is dedicated to further upgrades to the south end of the terminal, promising an even more impressive and modernized airport experience.
The centerpiece of phase two is the modernized lobby, designed to welcome visitors with open arms. The south end of the terminal will bode a new administrative office to streamline the airport’s operations, ensuring efficiency and customer satisfaction. Additionally, a board/community room that overlooks the ramp will provide a unique vantage point for aviation enthusiasts and a versatile space for meetings and events.
The upgrades include a dedicated viewing area for loved ones, fostering heartwarming reunions and farewells. And, of course, a brand new baggage claim area will ensure that travelers’ belongings are swiftly and securely reunited with their owners.
Connecting People, Possibilities, and Progress
The Lincoln Airport’s terminal project represents more than just bricks and mortar; it symbolizes of a new chapter in the city’s journey. As Chad Lay, LNK’s director of planning, aptly puts it, “With these upgrades, we’re not just connecting runways; we’re connecting people, possibilities, and progress. We’re excited to take LNK to new heights.”
Indeed, these enhancements to the Lincoln Airport are not just about making travel more convenient; they are about creating a hub that fosters connections, both among travelers and within the broader Lincoln community. It’s a place where journeys begin, reunions occur, and new opportunities emerge.
Community Engagement: Beyond the Terminal
The Lincoln Airport’s commitment to the community extends beyond its gleaming new terminal. Over the past year, the airport has been a focal point for the city’s cultural and social life. One standout event is the monthly outdoor movie series. From family favorites like Moana to classic blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, these outdoor screenings have become a beloved tradition not only at the airport but within the entire Lincoln community.
September’s showing of Moana drew over 2,200 community members, who came together to experience the film under the open sky. The event was not just about movies; it featured local food trucks, a captivating cultural dance performance, and a range of other fun activities. It’s no wonder the series earned recognition as one of the top 10 things to do for five dollars in Lincoln by Visit Lincoln!
Rachel Barth, LNK’s Director of Communications and Customer Engagement, explains the origin and growth of the LNK Outdoor Movie Series: “It started as a way to allow the community to meet safely during the pandemic. It has grown over the past three years to become an integral part of our efforts to be part of the Lincoln community. Our goal is to get people to the airport, even if they never fly. The events are free and allow us to support local food trucks, businesses, organizations, and nonprofits.”
