Savor the Morning: Lincoln’s Favorite Breakfast Spots

by Sriyani Tidball

Lincoln boasts several unique breakfast spots. Here are some standout places I recommend for a hearty meal:

The beautifully designed Well & Good restaurant at the new Scarlet Hotel on UNL’s Innovation Campus has quickly become a favorite. Open from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., it offers a diverse menu that showcases Nebraska’s local products. With a focus on homestyle cooking and modern touches, the restaurant evokes the flavors of family recipes while providing a taste of Nebraska’s agricultural heritage.

The Green Gateau, at 330 South 10th Street, is a charming, family-owned restaurant known for its all-day weekend brunch. Must-tries include the strawberry-stuffed crepes and a variety of Eggs Benedict, such as spinach or salmon. Their chocolate espresso muffins are also a hit, and you can enhance your meal with a mimosa or Bloody Mary. The attentive service and delicious food make the experience even better.

At 6028 Havelock Avenue, The Engine House offers a firehouse-inspired ambiance and a comprehensive breakfast menu, with classics like eggs, bacon, and burritos. It’s especially popular on weekends, so expect a wait, but the food and atmosphere make it worth it.

Greenfields, located at 7900 South 87th Street, is another excellent spot for a hearty breakfast. Known for its friendly Midwestern charm, it serves dishes like the Ultimate Steak Omelet and Belgian waffles with fresh fruit. The brunch menu is available all day to enjoy breakfast anytime.

The Hub Café, at 250 North 21st Street, is a farm-to-table favorite known for fresh ingredients. The Biscuit Egg Sandwich and Avocado Toast come highly recommended. This café is a must-visit for breakfast lovers in Lincoln.

Good Evans, at 70th and A, offers exceptional brunch with dishes like sweet potato pancakes and exquisite French toast. Their attentive staff ensures an extraordinary dining experience.

Cook’s Café, at 1300 North 66th Street, is known for its flavorful and generously portioned breakfast dishes, such as omelets and pork chops with eggs. Gluten-free options are available on request.

Early Bird, at the Telegraph District, 1900 K Street Suite 180, is great for breakfast or brunch. Open from 6.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m., it offers lots of seating, both indoor and outdoor, and a full menu of options from classic to vegetarian.

Le Quartier Bakery and Café is a breakfast haven at 70th and O streets. Open from 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. on weekends, it serves freshly baked pastries, like fantastic cinnamon rolls, alongside hot coffee. It’s a great spot for a relaxed breakfast with both indoor and outdoor seating.

C. Berry’s, downtown at 1422 O Street, is a late-night favorite for barbecue and breakfast. It offers pulled pork, smoked cheeseburgers, and mac and cheese. On weekends, it serves a special late-night breakfast.

Breakfast Unhinged, also downtown at 1601 Q Street, Suite A, is Lincoln’s first cereal bar. It offers 20 different cereals, specialty waffles, cold sandwiches, hot paninis, and more.

The Eatery, at 2548 South 48th Street, serves breakfast daily and offers a diverse menu of Midwest-inspired dishes. Gluten-free and vegan options are also available.

Penelope’s Lil’ Café, at 4724 Pioneers Boulevard, has been a local favorite for years. It is known for its friendly atmosphere and delicious food at fair prices.

Woodees, at 201Capitol Beach Boulevard, is a small café with a loyal customer base. It is praised for its fresh, made-to-order breakfasts.

Piedmont Bistro, at 1265 S Cotner Boulevard, offers a Sunday morning breakfast with unique items and is also popular for lunch and dinner.

Many downtown hotels offer breakfast, but my favorite is Embassy Suites Downtown at 11th and P. They serve an excellent breakfast for guests, and if you’re not staying there, you can still drop by and enjoy a made-to-order meal.

Looking for a Sweet Treat for Breakfast

Goldenrod Pastries, at the corner of 48th and Prescott, offers vegan and gluten-free delights for those with dietary restrictions. The Instagram-worthy treats, from French macarons to cookie sandwiches and fabulous cinnamon rolls, are as tasty as they are beautiful.

Tucked away beneath the Haymarket, The Rabbit Hole Bakery, at 8th and Q streets, is a whimsical spot for indulgent slices, tarts, and cocktails. Its ever-changing menu keeps things exciting.

For a tasty sweet treat, Butterfly Bakery is a good spot. Their bite-sized treats, from lemon tarts  to chocolate cigars, are always a hit. You can mix and match to make a perfect breakfast dessert platter.
