Every year, as we begin putting together Lincoln Today, I’m reminded of why I fell in love with this city, and why that love only grows deeper with time. When we first launched this magazine 35 years ago, our goal was simple: to represent Lincoln with heart and to showcase what makes this community so special. That mission hasn’t changed; if anything, it’s become an even more fulfilling pursuit.

Lincoln has always been more than just a place to live; it’s a place where one can belong and identify. It’s where neighbors still wave, where creativity thrives, and where kindness is part of our culture. On any given day, you can feel the heartbeat of this city, from the roar of Memorial Stadium on game days to the camaraderie spilling out of our neighborhood coffee shops, galleries, and parks.

Downtown and the Haymarket have blossomed into vibrant hubs filled with local flavor, unique shops, and live music drifting into the streets on warm summer nights. Even as Lincoln grows and modernizes, it remains deeply connected to its natural beauty. With more than 185 miles of trails, countless green spaces, and a skyline softened by 83,000 trees, this is a thriving city that breathes. With so many sunny days, friendly faces, and welcoming neighborhoods, there’s always a reason to step outside and be a part of it all.

Our commitment to education and opportunity remains a high priority in Lincoln. The University of Nebraska continues to lead in research and innovation, while our public and private schools and colleges inspire students to think and dream big. Lincoln’s young people are curious, capable, and compassionate, living in a city with a future in which they are excited to participate.

Economically, Lincoln remains steady and resilient. We’ve balanced growth with affordability, creating a community where small businesses thrive, new ideas take root, and families can build their futures with confidence. It’s no wonder people continue to choose Lincoln — for its safety, optimism, and genuine sense of balance and belonging.

What truly defines Lincoln is its people. I’m continually moved by the generosity, volunteer spirit, and quiet goodness that run through our community. Whether it’s cheering for the Huskers, the Saltdogs, or a peewee soccer team, or showing up for a neighbor in need, Lincolnites make this city feel like one big family.

As we present this 2026 edition of Lincoln Today, I want to say thank you to our dedicated Lincoln Today team, to our residents, business owners, educators, artists, and dreamers. You are our inspiration; each a vital part of this place we call home. Every year, our good life here just keeps getting better.
